Friday Field Trip – Hot Rod’s Burgers

Now that I work part time I have a little more time on my hands until school starts up in August. I am somewhat lacking in the friend department right now so a lot my adventure have been solo. Today I wanted to stomp around Midtown Sacramento and find a place to eat and draw.

While walking down K Street I stumbled across an old eatery that I used to frequent when I vended at a Second Saturday Arts & Crafts event nearby. I had only ever eaten their chicken tenders and I remembered they were pretty good so I decided to enjoy their food for old times sake.

Hot Rod’s Burgers is located at 2007 K Street, Sacramento, CA and they are open Sunday – Thursday 11am to 2am and Friday – Saturday 11am to 3am. Hot Rod’s is burger joint in the heart of Lavender Heights (Midtown’s very own gay district). It is sandwiched between a gay-centric adult store and several gay night clubs and bars. They have a hotdog happy hour daily between 4pm-7pm where you can get hotdogs for $2 and a bottle of beer for $2 as well.

The bright and cheery yellow exterior is complimented by the rich/vibrant red walls inside that are adorned with two flat screen TVs that play music videos from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Amongst the TVs are black frames filled with 90’s pop culture icons and musicians. This place almost seems to be stuck in the year 2000 and it brought me back to my junior high years. It was almost a literal Flashback Friday for me.

I wandered in around 1:30pm this Friday and there were a few patrons seated at the indoor tables enjoying their orders. I ordered a single patty cheeseburger, garlic fries and a small soda for a total of $10.75. A little pricy due to the fact that everything must be ordered individually and there are no combo options. I saddled up to the counters at the front of their dining area and took in the view of the outside. A few moments later the cashier called my name and I retrieved my order.

The fries were a little soggy and limp and besides the garlic were oily and bland. I added salt and ketchup to my hearts content to compensate for the mush texture. The burger was on a buttered and toasted bun (my favorite) and although the patty was thin it had decent flavor. Their “special sauce” was a simple thousand island dressing and did not add anything to the taste other than an excess amount of unnecessary sweetness. The upside to the burger was that it had a couple thick crisp dill pickle slices. I enjoy the tangy crunch of a dill pickle on a burger and not the mushy thin slices that usually accompany a burger.

The food was not that great and certainly not worth the $10 price tag. Not to mention that the soda machine had two syrups out and the ice cream machine had broken so I couldn’t even try their “amazing shakes” they promote in the window. There were a few obviously patched holes in the walls and this did not add to the ambiance.  The actual restaurant could use a little sprucing up and the moody attendants could hold their tongues. I’m not saying I don’t curse like a sailor but when I was a burger slinger at a local eatery you wouldn’t have heard me dropping “f-bombs” within ear shot of a customer.

Overall I would give Hot Rods ★★☆☆☆ 2 out of 5 stars.

I’m also working on a blogging schedule so we can get some stability up in here.

Friday after work I took a detour on the way home and bought a new outfit and shoes from Ross. One of my favorite places to shop because they have tons of dresses that are big girl size and yet still stylish. I love Steve Madden shoes. My affection for these designer shoes started way back in high school and due to my lack of balance I have only had the nerve to buy Steven Madden flats.

Since I’ve been wearing heels more frequently now I felt like I would take a risk and step up my heel game (pun intended). The heels I bought at Ross were from Steve Madden’s – Madden Girl line. They were animal print (one of my favorites), didn’t include a buckle on the back strap and oh so high. We’re talking 4 1/2 inches high. I thought I was up to the challenge.

Justine and I went out to dinner Friday night and painstakingly wore them to the restaurant. I receive a compliment on how cute they were. I baby stepped my way to the car and massaged my poor feet home. The following day I was determined to break them in and decided I would wear them ALL day long. I wore them to a Mary Kay function and stood on them quite a bit. My feet were slowly getting used to being arched so high.

When Justine and I went to see a movie later that day my feet were a little tired and but walking wasn’t as difficult as the night before. When we got out of the movie theater and started walking back to the car we went over the yellow “safety” braille bumps at the end of a walk-way and all of a sudden I was falling. Being the big girl that I am, I fell hard. I was wearing a skirt and pantyhose and didn’t want my business out in the open so I tried to fall sideways.  I grabbed on to Justine and somehow I still landed on my face.

Once I was on the ground I sprung back up and limped to the car. I have to admit it was humorous because I am a big clutz and this is the first time I have fallen in a long time. I managed to scrape up my right knee pretty bad and my left calve received most of the damage due to road rash.

Maybe you can see the pinkish red area on my calve that is now scabbed over and still rather tender. I am mostly upset that my brand new shoes are complete garbage as I tore a strap and scuffed them up badly.

Oh well. Now I have an excuse to replace them, but this time around I think I’ll stick to 3 inch heels or flats.

Thick Ass Calves

I have really thick calves. No, not cute baby cows. Thick ass, muscular, tree trunk, power calves. I can go on and on. I also have a love for boots, especially during the fall and winter months. I love the mid-calf and knee length boots the best. Ankle-booties are stupid. Yea I said it, they are worthless. Why call them booties and not just shoes? I don’t understand.

Anyways, every year fall comes around and I want to go out and buy sets and sets of boots. However there is always a problem that arises with this predicament. My calves are too wide. I have to buy boots from Torrid or other big girl stores, but when you buy boots from plus size places they tend to sell you the run of the mill flat fugly boots. The type of boots that are not as stylish or sexy that thinner girls get to wear. Also, they jack up the price by $50 because they have to use more fake leather or fake suede to cover your big ass calves.

I understand that the wider the calf the more real calves you have to use but come on, if you’re charging us more than at least make it worth our while and sex up our options. Now onto the real issue at hand. I have come across a few pairs of boots that I feel are sexy, stylish and affordable.
