Last week I received an email from a fellow graphic design artist letting me know that a couple months ago she pinned one of my cards to her Pinterest board. She wanted to let me know that recently people have been re-pinning and liking the post. I thanked her graciously and decided to take a look for myself.
Last Tuesday I logged in and searched for ‘pregnancy announcements’ and low and behold I found my design and her post. It had 70 re-pins and roughly 50 likes. I was shocked. Not to mention just a few short hours after I received the first email two others sent me Etsy messages and emails requesting I re-open my Etsy shop so that they could purchase the card.
Amazingly I had been thinking about re-opening my shop and selling some new designs since I now have the time to presume being crafty and creative. I was so excited from the new found encouragement I opened my shop and I already have two sales.
Just for giggles I searched for my design again and take a gander. In a week’s time the re-pins & likes have nearly doubled. I can feel the love and it just brings fuel to my fire. This weekend I have a nice little crafting session planned and I’ve been carrying my drawing book with me.
Whoa that was weird. I disappeared off the face of the internet. Not completely, I’ve been using Facebook like every other human being on the planet that has access to a computer. I have just felt really uninspired. I didn’t want to bore you with the mundane details of my day to day life.
Mostly because it has consisted of working, coming home, working, etc.
Anyways, let me fill you in on a few things. I’ve started to get back into drawing and designing. A lot. I created a set of greeting cards that are funny and sarcastic. They are called “Grown Ass Cards” and they are up for sale on my Etsy page.
I am now incredibly inspired thanks to my new rekindled passion for graphic design. The new school semester has begun and I’ve enrolled in two graphic design courses. I am extremely excited because one is about my all time favorite graphic design element, TYPOGRAPHY.
I hope to keep the blog updated more frequently now that I will have more projects and designs to post. In the mean time… head on over to the Etsy shop and check out some of my new card designs.
Till next time from me and the Yeti-
I can’t tell you just yet. I can’t even give you a hint and it’s tearing me apart. I’ve been away from the blog because I’ve been planning big things. I’ve been working on side projects and trying to figure out a few things about who I want to be and what I want to do in life.
What I can tell you is that I’ve gone back and forth and changed my mind about a hundred or so times. I feel as if I’m in this transition period with so many roads ahead of me it’s difficult to choose which one will fit me best. Do I open a sandwich shop and go back to manual labor in the food industry? Do I go back to school? Do I stay where I’m at and slowly implode day after day becoming a poor sad husk of a person?
So many choices… But, finally a conclusion has arrived and although it may be a step in the opposite direction of what I have been working towards I have chosen to go back to school. I’m going to take a few classes at the local community college and I’m going to get the technical skills I am currently lacking so that I can finally pursue being my own boss and running my own web/graphic design business. I have had an idea of a small business creating and maintaining websites for local business and organizations however I lack the key part in the equation which is the skill of coding websites. I can create awesome kick ass graphics and website layouts but I can’t make them work for the life of me.
That’s where school comes in, I’ll take a few classes maybe get my web master’s certificate and then slowly but surely build a client base and go from there. In the mean time I’m loving my Etsy shop. Seriously, I look forward to coming home from my 9-5 day job and busting my ass making different invitation designs and announcements. I’ve even done a few fliers and handouts for my current employer. I love it. It keeps me going and even though I get frustrated designing at times because I don’t want to copy or have my designs look too similar to others. I can’t believe how at peace I am when I’m creating. Hours fly by and the next thing I know I have to go to bed so that I can wake up and go to my day job only to crave being in my own little craft room/studio cranking out designs.
So now that I have my passion back and a solid plan to reach my goal, I can’t wait till May 12th so I can finally enroll in my first class since I graduated last May. I never thought I would say I miss academia and learning, but I do and I miss it bad.
Back to my secret, I still have a few kinks to work out. Like ordering supplies, doing some trial runs and experimenting with other designs and elements but I will leave you with a quick teaser. Hopefully you won’t know what the heck it is.
Well I’ve gone and done it again. I’ve made a new Etsy shop. This time it’s a little different, this time I don’t feel overwhelmed by my craft. This time it’s more enjoyable and can actually turn in to a full time gig at some point. Hopefully sooner than later.
Basically, I’ve made graphics for all of my blogs, for friend’s blogs and fliers for various events. I even took a few courses in college and some online seminars for graphic design. Recently, a family member asked if I could make her an invitation she could print out and give to friends for her daughter’s first birthday party. So, of course I dusted off my Adobe Photoshop software and made a mock invite just to prove to myself that I could do it. I haven’t stopped since. I’ve taken a look at various digital invites around the web and found my own style to set me apart from the hundreds of other Etsy shops filled with graphic design elements.
I really enjoy making invitations. Especially kids invites. Adult invitations and young adult invites are a little trickier because I feel like they have to be more refined and structured. While kid invites can be playful, colorful and funky. Right now all my invites are available for download and come in a digital file format so the purchaser can print them at home or at their local photo printing kiosk. I plan on expanding the shop and even printing, assembling and shipping the customized invites and announcements from home.
In the mean time here’s a quick peek at what you’ll find in my shop:
You should head on over and check it out. Spread the word while you’re at it, I’ll great appreciate the help!
